Nintendo has unveiled some of the casting for the upcoming live-action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. In a post on social media, The Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto has announced that the role of Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason, and Link will be played by Evan Ainsworth.
Along with confirming the casting, Miyamoto has also reaffirmed the May 7, 2027 theatrical release date for The Legend of Zelda. However, no other details have been revealed so far.
“This is Miyamoto. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san,” wrote Miyamoto on social media. I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen. “The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2027. Thank you for your patience.”
Originally slated for a March 2027 release, Nintendo had announced that the live action movie’s theatrical release would be getting pushed back to May. In a social media post, Miyamoto wrote that the cause for the delay came down to “production reasons”.
“It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be,” he wrote.
The Legend of Zelda’s live action film adaptation is being helmed by Wes Bell as director, along with Miyamoto as producer. Bell is known for having worked on the Maze Runner film trilogy, as well as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Nintendo was confirmed to have been working with Sony Pictures for a live action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda back in November 2023. While the company is working with Sony Pictures for most of the production work, it has also stated that it will be handling the production of visual content for the movie itself.
While no other details about The Legend of Zelda live action film have been revealed so far, a report from back in April indicates that there are plans to have a full trilogy of films made. The report comes courtesy of tracking data by Production Line, which indicates that three movies are set to be produced together between November 2025 to April 2026.
Production Line has also included a brief summary of what the film’s plot will involve, which indicates that the story will be staying fairly close to the plot of the original The Legend of Zelda on NES.
“The Legend of Zelda follows Link, a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness,” reads the summary. “The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce—an ancient relic said to grant limitless power. To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest.”
