Microsoft is looking to have a pretty strong year in terms of videogame releases. The Xbox Developer Direct revealed that Doom: The Dark Ages is coming in just a few short months on May 15, but before that there’s going to be another Microsoft title landing.

South of Midnight from Compulsion Games will release on April 8 for Xbox and PC, and will be available on Game Pass on day 1. As is becoming the norm, you can also play five days earlier if you pay extra for the Premium Edition. In other words, the game releases on April 3, then gets a delayed release on April 8 for the people who didn’t hand over even more cash.

So far, no PlayStation release has mentioned, but considering how things have been going it’ll probably make its way to Sony’s machine at somepoint.

The new story trailer and official blog post have provided some extra details about the game.

“In our story trailer, protagonist Hazel and her mother are preparing for the impending hurricane. The storm proves massive, causing catastrophic flooding-and causing their own home to be swept down river with her mother in it. Its aftermath shows the fictional town of Prospero, located in the southern United States, eerily calm while irrevocably changed from the hurricane’s destruction. Here, Hazel undertakes a journey in search of her mother, while finding out more about herself and her family’s lineage in the process.”

“Hazel begins to see fantastical phenomena all over Prospero, including meeting Catfish, an enormous – and talking – creature in his own right, stuck in a tree following the hurricane’s destruction. Catfish tells Hazel she is a Weaver, someone who possesses magical powers and can see how our threads connect to form the woven tapestry of our fates.”

South of Midnight caught my attention when it was revealed in June 2023 and this new trailer has solidified that interest. The southern music, the stop-motion graphics and the creature designs are all amazing!

I do have a few small doubts: a few bits of dialogue are of the overplayed quippy variety, for example; and a bit more gameplay would have been nice.

Overall, though, South of Midnight has my interest.
