The Resistance series was a major part of the PS3 era, but sadly never got to continue past that. It’s often speculated as to exactly why Sony never kept the series going, especially as PlayStation doesn’t have any shooters currently in its first-party portfolio.

Former IGN journalist and now podcaster Colin Moriarty said in an episode of Sacred Symbols in 2021 that people he knew at Insomniac had told him that they had in fact pitched Resistance 4 but that it was turned down due to them having too many post-apocalyptic games in development, such as Days Gone, The Last of Us and Killzone: Shadow Fall.

Now, though, we have confirmation from the horse’s mouth that Resistance 4 was indeed pitched to Sony.

Soon-to-be former president of Insomniac Games Ted Price shared this tidbit on the latest episode of the Kinda Funny Gamescast. Price was asked what his favourite game that he pitched was that never got greenlit. Price laughs and says, “Yeah, I’ll share one: Resistance 4.”

“We did pitch that one and it was a wonderful concept, and, it just, in terms of timing and market opportunity, didn’t work out,” said Price. “But it was the result of a lot of Insomniac team members being passionate about extending the story further because I do believe that Resistance has set up a really cool alternate history base where anything can happen with the Chimera and where they go and what their origins are.”

“Personally, I love this franchise. I was fortunate enough to be creative director on the first two Resistances. And I will remember many, many moments—good and bad—when it comes to development that taught us all a lot about how we can elevate ourselves under some pretty difficult situations.”

It seems unlikely that Insomniac will return to the Resistance series any time soon as the company is busy working on the next Spider-Man title along with the upcoming Wolverine game. But since we do live in an age of remasters and remakes, so there’s always a chance Resistance could come back.
