The second episode of Beyond the Borderlands is now available, with Gearbox’s managing narrative director, Lin Joyce, and narrative director, Sam Winkler, delving deeper into Borderlands 4. This time, the focus is on Kairos’ various factions and leaders.

The first most notable faction is the Outbounders, led by Rush, who also crash on Kairos and are keen to leave. Soon enough, they join the Crimson Resistance alongside the Vault Hunters. Then there are the Augers, the descendants of the mining teams originally sent to the planet by the Timekeeper and led by Calder.

Idolator Sol rules over the Fadefields and seeks the main villain’s approval, but in Terminus Range, there’s Vile Lictor, who’s also an Auger and experimenting with Eridium. You also have the Electi, previously the upper class of the Timekeeper’s city, but who are left outside after Elpis crashes into the world. Led by Levain, they’re seeking to survive just like everyone else.

Finally, there’s the Ripper Queen in Cadia Burn, who rips out her Bolts (and those of her soldiers, willingly or not) and rebels against the Timekeeper. As for the latter, he’s a “threat that’s always hanging over the player’s actions.”

Joyce ended by calling the sequel a “turning point in our universe” and it’s worth playing to see “how it connects back to our previous titles” and “also at the end, where it will point.”

Borderlands 4 launches on September 12th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC (and later for Nintendo Switch 2). Check out the story trailer here.
