Ubisoft’s New ‘Blood Dragon’ NFT Game Has Quietly Launched

Ubisoft has silently launched Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E., a spin-off of a spin-off that’s loosely connected to Far Cry via the 2013 standalone expansion, Blood Dragon. It’s no wonder why the gaming titan has kept this project relatively quiet, though – it’s an NFT-powered game that doesn’t look good, even in early access.

This all-new Web3 game requires users to buy an ‘ID Card’ NFT before they can register as a ‘Niji Warrior’ and get in on the action in this rudimentary top-down shooter based on the 2023 Netflix show, Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix.

    Sticking To Their Guns

Despite receiving blowback in the past for involvement in blockchain-based activities and NFT endeavours, Ubisoft’s leadership team has maintained a steady course in the space. The latest delivery in the pipeline is Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E., which Ubisoft hasn’t really made too much noise about.

    Here’s the trailer:

That’s correct – you did see Rayman there.

In Captain Laserhawk, players are invited to participate in a reality TV hosted by none other than Rayman. They’ll fight in top-down shooter-based matches with seven other players, working to ‘unlock hundreds of cool, truly unique cosmetics to stand out’.

It all begins with the purchase of a unique ID card – which forms the core NFT connection.

Hosted on the Aribtrum L2 blockchain, prospective players can use the Magic Eden marketplace to pick up an NFT – only 10,000 are available, though. At the time of publishing, the cheapest Niji Warrior ID cards boasted a price tag of around $14, with the most ambitious owner trying to sell their Niji Warrior for a bizarre value of $4.4 million.

It’s obviously a joke, as they’re asking for ‘1,337’ ETH.

The first 26 Niji Warrior ID Cards are unlisted for sale, which suggests their owners are keeping a tight hold on them for now. I don’t understand how it all works, but from what I can see on Magic Eden, it looks as though one ‘owner’ has a claim to hundreds of unique NFTs from the game.

Ubisoft has leant on Aleph.im’s technology to bring these NFTs to life, just as it did in Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, which was also released this year.
