Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 wasn’t quite nail the landing in the same way Pro Skater 1+2 did, but was still an enjoyable acid drop into the vert ramp of nostalgia. However, as fun as it was, the sales numbers are not looking strong.
In this week’s newsletter from Alinea Analytics, Rhys Elliot gave us a look at July’s most downloaded games across Xbox, PlayStation and PC. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 ranked as the 9th highest on their chart, bringing in 1.9 million downloads. Of course, the game launched straight onto Game Pass, which is where most of those downloads came from.
What’s really interesting, though, is that Elliot provided a way to gauge sales. “…there sadly isn’t too much to be stoked about sales-wise, as over 90% of these came from Xbox due to its Game Pass inclusion.”
So, if the game had 1.9m downloads and at least 90% of those were from Game Pass, that means we can surmise that the game only sold about 190,000 copies across Xbox, PlayStation and Steam. That number may be slightly higher now, of course, but it’s still not great.
Compared to the first game, Pro Skater 3+4 is doing much better in terms of raw player numbers, as Pro Skater 1+2 sold a million copies in its first two weeks. But as I’m sure you already figured out, that’s sales and not just players, so 1+2 performed massively better in that sense.
These days, though, it’s much harder to gauge success because Game Pass works on completely different metrics, and Microsoft aren’t sharing what those are – they might be very happy with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4, which was rumoured to have been given just 18 months of development and a small budget.
