The PS5 Has Now Sold Over 80 Million Units – GPlayr

It’s time for another financial report, and that means we get a glimpse at how well the PS5 has sold. Spoiler: pretty well.

According to Sony, their machine sold another 2.5 million units across Q1 which ran from April to June. That’s 0.1 million more than it sold in Q1 of last year.

That brings the grand total of PS5 consoles sold to 80.3 million, which means based on Wikipedia’s ranking of the best-selling consoles, the PS5 now sits in 11th. Well, to be more exact, it might be 11th because the PlayStation Portable is listed as having greater than 80 million units sold.

Regardless of that technicality, the PS5 is gradually closing in on the likes of the Xbox 360 (84 million) and Sony’s own PS3 (87.4). It does have quite a ways to go to beat the PS4, though, which sits at just over 117 million, and the mighty PS2 which is currently the best-selling console of all time at over 160 million.

The report also suggests that sales of games are up slightly over Q1 last year as well. There was also a small 3% rise in digital sales over physical sales, bringing it to 83% which is the highest reported for this financial year.

Finally, PlayStation’s monthly active users remained fairly steady at 123 million. We don’t know exactly how Sony defines active users, but given the amount of PS5s that have been sold we can say that a good chunk of people must still be playing on PS4. I also assume PC users are counted as well, or at least those with a PSN account.

It’ll be interesting to see how well the PS5 does this year. There’s only one PlayStation first-party title coming out this year (Ghost of Yotei) to help bolster sales. However, with Xbox moving more games over to PlayStation, that might tempt a few people to pick up Sony’s box. But then again, we also have the Switch 2 on the market now and selling fast, so it could steal some of Sony’s potential audience.

Meanwhile, this month sees the release of Helldivers 2 on Xbox. Plenty of Xbox games have found success on PlayStation, but can PlayStation do the same on the green team’s machine?
