Hollow Knight: Silksong is doing phenomenally well, despite a slightly rocky start due to multiple storefronts throwing a tantrum and breaking. Early data suggests it’s absolutely killing it in terms of sales and reviews.
First, let’s tackle some sales and player numbers. A new report from Alinea Analytics claims that Hollow Knight: Silksong has topped 5 million player across all platforms, with a million of those coming from Game Pass on Xbox and PC.
Of course, you’re smart, so you’ll have already clocked that I said players and not sales. These days, a lot of developers and publishers only talk about player counts, which can be frustrating. Thankfully, Alinea can help us out there, too. According to their data, the game has sold 3m copies on Steam, resulting in revenue of $50 million. That’s in just 3 days.
With 5 million players reported overall, we can start piecing the numbers together: 3 million copies sold on Steam, plus 1 million players via Game Pass. That leaves roughly 1 million players unaccounted for, which almost certainly represents sales across PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. In other words, the best estimate right now is around 4 million actual sales.
Of course, Alinea Analytics is a 3rd party firm that uses its own secret methods to determine sales data, so everything needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. Hopefully, Team Cherry will confirm some of these numbers.
The good news for Silksong does not end there, because the game has also claimed the crown as the top-reviewed title of 2025. Although there are some caveats.
Review aggregator Opencritic currently lists the game as having an impressive score of 98, which makes it the highest-scoring game of the year by a margin of 4 points, beating out the likes of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. However, this is based on just 10 critic reviews at the moment, because Team Cherry opted not to send out review keys prior to launch. That means a lot of the big publications like IGN and Youtubers such as SkillUp have not offered up their scores yet. In other words, the score might drop. Or it might stay the same. Or go even higher. Who knows?
For now, though, it’s a fun title for the game to hold.
