Nintendo Switch 2’s Reported 5 Million Sales Was Leaked Test Data That Was “Not Accurate”

Nintendo has seemingly been the target of a data leak that might have revealed some sales data. According to industry analyst David Gibson, the company has confirmed this leak in a statement. However, Nintendo has also stated that any sales figures that were discovered as part of the leak aren’t real.

As part of the leak, the sales figures for the recently-launched Switch 2 were reportedly sitting at around 5 million units. However, according to Nintendo itself, these sales figures are “not accurate and not related to any sales result or projection” for the console.

“It appears that test data prepared for a website update was unintentionally made publicly accessible,” said the company in its statement. “Temporarily visible data was for testing purposes only, and is not accurate and not related to any sales result or projection of Switch 2.”

The Nintendo Switch 2 officially hit store shelves on June 5, and since then, has seemingly been setting sales records. As caught by Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, the Switch 2 has even out-done the sales records that were set by the PS4. In its first week, the Switch 2 has sold more than 1.1 million units in the US alone, with around 79 percent of the sales being accounted for by the Mario Kart World bundle of the game.

Mario Kart World, being one of the launch titles for the Switch 2, also managed to be the best-selling game for the console, followed by Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.

Shortly after the console’s launch, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa had revealed that more than 3.5 million units had been sold in its first four days across all regions. This includes regions like Japan, where the console was available in the form of multiple SKUs, including a lower-cost Japanese-only version of the console that doesn’t include any other language options.

While the Nintendo Switch 2 has seen quite a bit of success on launch, not all buyers of the console had a good experience. On launch day, several Switch 2 buyers took to social media to complain about getting damaged Switch 2 units. The damage, according to these users, was caused by one retailer in the US having stapled purchase receipts to the box of the Switch 2.

These staples had seemingly punctured through the box, and all the way into the display of the Switch 2. Users had also presented several pictures showcasing this damage. However, the damage seems to have been largely isolated to a single retailer.

“I knew this would happen – it was a weird decision by Nintendo to have the screen sit face-side-up at the very top of the box with only the thin cardboard to protect it,” posted one disgruntled buyer at the time. “You’re going to hear about a few damaged screens in the coming days. They are at risk just being stacked in shipping.”

“Temporarily visible data was for testing purposes only, and is not accurate and not related to any sales result or projection of Switch 2. ” So do not take it that 5m Switch 2 sell-in for June. I am expecting 5.4m when results are announced Aug 1st. 2/2.
