ORIGINAL STORY: Since abandoning the classic console exclusivity business model, Xbox has begun infecting other parties with its sneaky, green tendrils. The recently announced ROG Xbox Ally X is a prime example. And now, according to a new report, Xbox is teaming up with Meta to release an Xbox-branded Quest 3s.
The report comes from the fantastically named gamesandwich.com. While the name is funny, the people running the site have a lot of experience covering the industry and have a proven track record. They accurately predicted that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 would launch on July 13th, and broke the news of a Deadpool VR game.
According to them, sources have shared that the new Quest 3S will be shadow-dropped on June 25, and will be priced at $399.
Don’t get too excited, though, because there’s nothing special under the hood. According to article author Kevin Lopez, it will be a green and black headset with matching accessories. But it will come with an Elite Strap and an Xbox wireless controller, along with 3 months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
In other words, it’s a regular Meta Quest 3S, just with an Xbox theme.
Of course, the headset cannot natively run Xbox games, but what you can do is stream games via Xbox Cloud Gaming and use the headset as a massive projector, enabling you to play stuff like DOOM: The Dark Ages on a massive screen.
It’s a weird move, in many respects. VR gaming remains a very small niche, and streaming games to a headset is an even smaller niche, so it’s unlikely this will do anything for Xbox’s Game Pass numbers. But it does play into Xbox’s current marketing campaign of everything being an Xbox.
