While Mario Kart World packs familiar modes like Grand Prix and new ones like Knockout Tour, it’s also introducing Free Roam, a first for the series. Players can explore the map without restrictions (yes, even to the very edges) and discover all kinds of secrets.
However, one of the more intriguing activities is unlocking new outfits for characters and kart skins. By discovering and consuming different food items, these will become available permanently and can be selected before racing. For example, consuming sushi unlocks the Happi, Yukata and Matsuri skins for Mario and Luigi, Princess Peach, and Yoshi, paying homage to traditional Japanese festivals.
Some vehicle skins are also very cool, including one inspired by Famicom (later launched worldwide as the NES). Given the sheer number of characters and vehicles, there’s a lot of customization.
Mario Kart World launches on June 5th for Nintendo Switch 2. Head here for more details on the new courses and the potential return of Rainbow Road.
