MachineGames Confirms Desire for Third Mainline Wolfenstein Game in New Documentary – GPlayr

MachineGames are a busy bunch, having developed the immensely awesome Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. With their involvement with Disney, fans have been wondering if the company might return to its most famous series, Wolfenstein. The good news is that MachineGames wants to do another one.

The latest documentary by YouTube channel Noclip is all about MachineGames and the making of Wolfenstein. It’s a fantastic look into the studio and their modern spin on the series, often cited as helping establish what the FPS genre has become.

Towards the end of the documentary, studio director Jerk Gustafsson discusses the themes of The New Order and The New Colossus, and outright states that MachineGames has always considered the series to be a trilogy.

“The first game is very much about B.J. and how he actually… he understands that the Nazis have won the war, but it’s also a very personal journey for him. But at the same time, then he meets Anya. He starts to see that there are other things at play… moving into New Colossus, then we move into a wider group of people around you, being part of the resistance, something bigger… I think this is important to say, because we have always seen this as a trilogy.“

Gustafsson explains that from day one, they mapped out what would happen to B.J. across three games, not just two.

“I think that’s important to say, because – at least, I hope – that we’re not done with Wolfenstein yet. We have a story to tell.”

While this isn’t a confirmation that a third mainline game is officially greenlit — since that decision rests with Bethesda and parent company Microsoft — it confirms that MachineGames does want to make another entry. Various reports since 2019 have suggested the team is working on another Wolfenstein, but this is, to the best of my knowledge, the first time they’ve openly and officially talked about wanting to do it.

Any third game would presumably be a direct sequel to The New Colossus and thus take place before the events of The Youngblood, the spin-off game starring B.J.’s twin daughters set 20 years in the future.

As for me, I’ve been itching for a new, proper Wolfenstein game since playing the highly disappointing The Youngblood. However, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was so much fun that I completely forgave the team for not brushing off B.J. and handing him a gun.
