GameStop is Silently Shutting Down More US Stores

Since 2020 GameStop has shut down more than 1000 stores across the United States, and as 2025 kicks off, the retailer is bringing down the shutters on more – but it’s doing so very quietly.

On social media and platforms like Reddit, displeased employees are venting their frustration at a wave of layoffs and store closures that hasn’t been publicly addressed by GameStop. It appears the retailer is making waves of redundancies as silently as possible, but the internet reveals all.

    More Closures

In December, GameStop shut down 300 stores across North America. It also brought down Game Informer after 30 years of publication, much to the dismay of fans and followers worldwide. The corporation was unabashed by the outrage that surfaced following that move, and the company went as far as to delete GI’s farewell messages from existence shortly after they were written.

On Reddit, several posts have surfaced over the last few days from disgruntled employees being let go from GameStop. It was reported that the company has done little to appease the employee base, refusing to offer even a ‘token statement’ about the slew of store closures across the nation.

The most recent post on the GameStop subreddit simply starts with, ‘So long with a heavy heart.’ Another user wrote that their local GameStop, which they have been frequenting for 20 years, has suddenly closed down. They wrote, ‘You deserve better.’

In a report, PSLS confirmed that employees are being offered severance packages and transfers, but the former is only open to full-time employees like managers. If you’re a part-time GameStop employee, it’s a transfer or bust. Given the way the company is going, there won’t be many stores left to transfer to soon.

Has your local GameStop shut down without warning? Let us know on the GPlayr forum.
