Far Cry 4 has received an out-of-the-blue update that, coincidentally, has made the game less blue. The silent patch that wasn’t addressed anywhere by Ubisoft has removed nudity from the game. This was corroborated by eagle-eyed Reddit users who booted up the game to see what was new following the change.
Some have theorised that the change is related to Ubisoft and Tencent’s recent partnership that spun off Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed, and Rainbow Six to exist under a new subsidiary. On March 31, Far Cry 3 also underwent a silent patch, but folks have yet to see what was changed.
Out of Nowhere
The main sequence where the change can be noticed is when the player enters the Shanath Arena. In there, you can find a female character who was topless before this update was dropped. She had tattoos semi-obscuring her breasts, but they were exposed. Now that the update has been rolled out, she’s wearing a bra-like garment that effectively covers her up.
This is what was first noticed and shared by users on Reddit.
Another user checked other characters across the game, noting that Yuma’s character model hadn’t been updated despite being relatively exposed. It was also discovered that in the Shanath Arena, Ajay Gale, the game’s protagonist, is no longer naked and is wearing a loincloth over his genitals, obscuring them from view.
This is the first time in two years that Far Cry 4 has been updated, prompting many to question why it has come out of nowhere.
Fans are now scouring other games, checking Far Cry 3 to see if Citra’s nudity was stripped and Far Cry: Primal to see if ‘caveman sex scenes’ have been removed.
I’ve reached out to Ubisoft to see if I can learn more about this change.
UPDATE – Boobs are back! Ubisoft has since replied to GPlayr on X with the following:
“To clarify, the update was the result of a mistake during deployment. Content intended specifically for the Japanese version of the game was accidentally pushed to the global Steam version.
The team has since corrected the error by reuploading the proper global files to Steam. If players are still seeing anything unusual, restarting Steam and checking for updates should resolve it.
Just to reassure everyone: there are no plans to censor Far Cry. This was purely a regional packaging error and has now been fully addressed. Thank you“
