Backyard Football ’99 will launch for PC via Steam, iOS, and Android on September 9, publisher Playground Productions and developer Mega Cat Studios announced.
“Backyard Football ’99 made me a football fan for life,” said Playground Productions CEO Lindsay Barnett in a press release. “From learning plays to managing teams, this game made football accessible, fun, and exciting for all ages. I am so proud to bring it back in time for football season.”
Detroit Lions veteran running back Barry Sanders added, “Backyard Sports holds a special place in the hearts of sports fans. Joining Backyard Football in 1999 was a great honor, and I’m excited to celebrate its relaunch for fans old and new.”
Longtime Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino said, “Bringing this game back to a new generation of fans and reconnecting with the OGs makes me so excited at this moment in time. This moment is ripe for introducing these games because kids today crave connection more than ever, and games like these offer a fantastic platform to experience the fun and excitement of the sport I’ve loved for so long.”

Line Up for Backyard Football
Backyard Football ’99, the classic title now enhanced to run on modern systems. Whether you’re picking your dream team, running Pete Wheeler on a sweep lining up to hit the game winning field goal, or enjoying the witty banter of hosts Sunny Day and Chuck Downfield, simple controls let anyone pick up and play ball!
Game Modes
- Single Game – Players can play a single game in a single or two player setting. Rosters can be imported from season play, or they can be picked new, or completely randomized. Players may pick between five fields and three weather conditions to play with.
- Season Mode – Players can draft seven Backyard players into a team and compete against 15 other teams in the Backyard Football League. Each team plays a 14-game season—six times within their division, 4 times against the other season and 4 times against the other conference. By the end of the regular season, the four division champions plus four wild card teams enter the Backyard Football League Playoffs, with each Conference finalist competing for the Super Colossal Cereal Bowl (the final championship game).
Earn Classic Power-Ups
Earn power-ups by completing passes on offense and sacking the opposing QB on defense.
- Offensive
- Hocus Pocus – Pass play which results in a receiver teleporting downfield, preferably to open field
- Sonic Boom – Run play which disables the opponents’ players from moving for a short time
- Leap Frog – Run play which causes your running back to leap downfield for several yards
- Super Punt – Punt which automatically punts to the opponent’s 20 yard line
- Defensive
- Cough Drop – Causes the opponent to fumble when tackled
- Chameleon – Causes the team to replicate the uniform colors of the other team
- Spring Loaded – Causes the linebacker to leap over the line of scrimmage

At our core, we are fans first—not just of video games, but of the Backyard Sports franchise. Fans have asked for accessible and legal ways to play their original Backyard titles for years, and we are excited to deliver.
Without having access to the source code, there are hard limitations on the experience we can create. As an example, we can’t use the original 32-bit code to support modern macOS, as even with an incredibly clever wrapper, macOS can’t execute the binaries.
