Resident Evil Requiem’s Dual Perspectives are “Like Developing Two Separate Games,” Says Capcom

Resident Evil Requiem, Capcom’s next mainline title in the legendary survival horror series, is taking a few different directions. While Grace Ashcroft is a departure from previous protagonists in her everyday person-like demeanor, there’s also the inclusion of a first- and third-person perspective.

Capcom’s remakes have traditionally used a third-person perspective. Meanwhile, mainline titles Resident Evil 7: biohazard and Resident Evil Village were third-person. Of course, the latter did receive a third-person mode in the Winters’ Expansion, but producer Masato Kumazawa clarified to PlayStation Blog that it wasn’t a prototype for Requiem.

“The third-person mode added to Resident Evil Village was created simply in response to fan requests and was not intended as a prototype. Our analysis of recent gameplay trends in the series revealed that many players tend to engage with either first-person or third-person titles exclusively.

“With that in mind, we’ve included both perspectives in Resident Evil Requiem, driven by the desire for all Resident Evil fans to enjoy the latest installment.” According to rumors, the team allegedly decided early on in development to offer both perspectives.

Of course, it’s not a matter of changing the camera distance. Kumazawa explains that including both perspectives is similar to “developing two separate games in parallel.”

“In modern 3D-rendered games, some may think that changing the perspective is a simple task. However, in the survival horror genre, where delicate adjustments are made to evoke fear in the player, there are significant differences between first-person and third-person perspectives.

“These differences affect not only character models and animations but also fine-tuned balance, UI, sound design, and more. It’s essentially like developing two separate games in parallel.”

Launching on February 27th, 2026, Resident Evil Requiem will be available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. It surpassed one million wishlists on all storefronts less than three weeks after its reveal and will be playable for Gamescom attendees in August.
